Botswana has now implemented rapid testing (no charge) at all ports of entry. So in addition to the mandatory negative RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival, all travellers will now be subject to a COVID-19 rapid test on entry. At Maun Airport, it takes about 20 minutes to complete the paperwork, then the test is taken and you wait about 15 minutes for the results.
The following is a recap of the existing protocols that are in place:
Entry Requirements
• Negative RT-PCR test (Valid for 72 hours) – Results to be colour printed and date stamped by the laboratory / doctor
• Rapid test at all ports of entry (free of charge). This will continue for the foreseeable future.
Exit Requirements
• Negative RT-PCR test (Valid for 72 hours) - Results to be colour printed and date stamped by the laboratory / doctor
Should a person test positive:
• The government facility has 12 rooms to accommodate 24 patients. Currently priority is being given to Batswana who are showing serious symptoms and need monitoring.
• Travellers are expected to arrange and pay for their own accommodation in a lodge/hotel.
• Quarantine will last 10 days if there are no symptoms or 14 days if symptoms show.
• A policeman will be dispatched to keep watch outside the hotel room.
In addition:
• Botswana has extended its hours of curfew, which are now from 20h00 to 04h00. All non-essential travel and movement between these hours is restricted.
• The sale and public consumption of alcohol has also been suspended under the new regulations.
